Hearing Research Matters magazine
Since 1983, Hearing Matters Australia (HMA) has been proud to provide peer support to people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Over the years, our close connections with the hearing research sector have enabled many of our members to participate in groundbreaking studies, helping to advance knowledge and improve hearing health outcomes.
On 16 February 2025, HMA launched the first digital edition of Hearing Research Matters, a magazine dedicated to showcasing the exceptional research being carried out to support the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
While much important work is happening in laboratories and clinics across Australia and beyond, these vital efforts rarely receive the attention they deserve. This publication aims to bridge that gap by making complex research accessible, engaging, and relevant to everyday life.
Each edition explores the latest discoveries in hearing science — from breakthroughs in hearing aid and cochlear implant technology to new frontiers in neuroimaging — all with the goal of improving communication, connection, and hearing health across diverse communities.

HMA warmly welcomes your suggestions and ideas to share with our community. You can get involved by sending us your letters, comments, or written contributions for publication — whether they’re personal experiences, challenges you’ve faced, or insights that can help improve the quality of life for people who are hard of hearing.
We also invite researchers, clinicians, audiologists, and hearing health professionals to contribute their expertise and discoveries in future editions of Hearing Research Matters. Together, we can help knowledge travel further and make a real difference.
